Villa del Balbianello Proposal Guide

Villa del Balbianello is the proposal location we get asked about most on Lake Como. It sits on a promontory with water on three sides, with cypresses and terraces running down to the lake and very little in the frame you would want to edit out. Many couples know it from the screen before they arrive: the loggia appears in Casino Royale (2006), where Bond recovers with Vesper, and the villa was a filming location for Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002), where Anakin and Padmé marry.

1.WHY THIS LOCATION WORKS FOR A PROPOSAL

The villa stands on the Lavedo promontory just outside Lenno, in Tremezzina. You cannot drive to it. You arrive on foot from Lenno or by the small taxi boat from the Lido di Lenno, and that short approach gives the day a build-up a roadside viewpoint does not. The loggia and the upper terrace look out over the central lake and the mountains. Water, stone and sky, without clutter: that is why it films so well.

It is a heritage site run by FAI, Italy's national trust, not a venue you rent for the afternoon. That shapes the planning around opening days, tickets and other visitors.

2.A BRIEF HISTORY

Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini turned a former Franciscan monastery on the site into a summer villa in 1787 and added the loggia that still carries his name, the Loggia Durini, the portico you will recognise from both films. After his death it passed to his nephew Luigi Porro Lambertenghi, and in the nineteenth century it became a meeting place for Risorgimento patriots, including the writer Silvio Pellico. Its last private owner was Guido Monzino, who led the first Italian expedition to reach the summit of Everest. When he died in 1988 he left the villa to FAI, which is why it is open to visitors today.

3.OPENING DAYS, TICKETS AND BOOKING

At the time of writing, FAI's calendar for 2026 has regular opening from 14 March, every day except Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:00 to 18:00. Last entry to the park is 17:00 and the last guided tour of the house starts at 16:00. From November the hours drop to 10:00 to 17:00, with selected days only in December and early January 2027.

Booking is required, through the official site linked from the FAI page for Villa del Balbianello. Adult tickets are roughly €15 for the park and €25 for the park plus a guided tour of the house at the time of writing. FAI members enter the park free.

FAI had not published its full 2027 season when we wrote this. In 2026 regular opening began in mid-March, and a similar pattern is likely, but check before you fix a date. The villa also hosts private events, and on those days access or hours can be restricted. Filming a proposal here needs a permit from FAI, and its fee is paid by the couple, separately from the film. We check the calendar and request the permit with the site before confirming a date with a couple. Book your tickets as soon as your date is settled, because summer weekends can sell out.

4.GETTING THERE FROM LENNO

• On foot: a path of about 1 km leads from Lenno to the villa gate, partly gravel and uphill on the way in. FAI estimates around 25 minutes. You may read that the path only opens on Tuesdays and weekends. That is out of date: it now follows the villa's opening days.
• By taxi boat: a paid shuttle runs from the Lido di Lenno to the villa's jetty in about 10 minutes. Fares and times are set by the operator, so check at the kiosk on the day.
• Reaching Lenno: Lenno has a ferry stop on the public Navigazione Laghi service, and there is paid parking in town if you drive.

For a proposal we usually suggest the boat on the way in, so you arrive relaxed rather than out of breath, and the walk back afterwards.

5.THE BEST TIME OF DAY

The quietest stretch is usually the first 30 to 45 minutes after the 10:00 opening, before tour groups and boats from Bellagio and other towns build up. In our experience this matters more than any other timing decision here.

Sunset is harder. From mid-March to October the villa closes at 18:00, well before sunset, which on Lake Como falls around 18:30 in mid-March, after 21:00 in late June and around 19:00 in early October. A sunset proposal inside the villa is not possible for most of the season. And because Balbianello sits on the western shore with mountains behind it, it loses direct sun before the official sunset time. How much earlier varies by season and spot. If warm evening light matters to you, consider a separate boat moment later in the day.

A typical morning: arrive in Lenno around 09:15, take the taxi boat at about 09:40, enter at 10:00 with your tickets while we are already in position, and propose on the loggia between 10:15 and 10:40. Afterwards, the gardens, the house tour if you want it, and lunch in Lenno.

6.HOW WE FILM IT

The brief is the same one we use everywhere on the lake: stay far enough back that nothing about our presence tips off your partner, and let the real moment, not a staged re-enactment, be what ends up in the film. At Balbianello that usually means filming from the lower terrace or along the treeline rather than standing near you, using the villa's own sightlines for a clean, wide shot. Before the day we agree on the exact spot, so you know where to stop.

Do not count on a drone shot: Italian drone rules (ENAC and D-Flight) apply, and the site would have to agree.

Proposal films start from €1,000, with a €500 deposit per shooting day to secure the date. Travel around Lake Como is included and the film is delivered within about two weeks. Photography can be added with our own photographer.

7.OTHER VISITORS, RAIN AND AFTER THE YES

Balbianello is not a private booking, so other visitors will be in the gardens. In our experience it rarely spoils the moment, and people at a distance can make a film feel more real.

• Rain: the loggia gives some cover, but wet paths and grey light change the mood. Leave a spare day in your trip if you can.
• The ring: keep it in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag. It goes through the airport X-ray like anything else, and you can ask for a private check if your partner is next to you. On the day, a front pocket is safer than a shared bag.
• After the yes: book lunch in Lenno or elsewhere in Tremezzina ahead of time. Restaurants, boats and florists are booked by you, and we can recommend people we have worked with.

Can you propose at Villa del Balbianello?

Yes, as regular ticket holders during opening hours, in the gardens or on the loggia. Other visitors will be around. For anything beyond a normal visit, such as decorations or professional equipment, ask FAI in advance.

What days is Villa del Balbianello open?

Is the walking path from Lenno open every day?
