Villa del Balbianello earns its reputation, but its popularity is also exactly why some couples ask us for alternatives - a quieter setting, fewer other visitors in the background, a location that isn't the one everyone recognizes from the films it was in. If that's you, here are a few places worth considering.

1.CASTELLO DI VEZIO, ABOVE VARENNA

Perched on the hillside above Varenna, this small medieval castle looks back across the whole lake - Bellagio, Tremezzina, and the mountains beyond, all from one spot most day-trippers never make the walk up to see. The building dates to the 13th century, originally part of a chain of early-warning watchtowers with roots going back to the era of Queen Theodelinda. It's one of the more private settings on the lake simply because of the climb involved, and it opens for the season from March.

2.VILLA MELZI, BELLAGIO

The gardens at Villa Melzi sit right on the water at Bellagio, with wide lawns and lake views that don't need a boat or a hike to reach. Built between 1808 and 1810 as the summer residence of Francesco Melzi d'Eril, Duke of Lodi, the 800-metre lakeside garden mixes Egyptian and Roman statues among the trees with a quiet Japanese pond toward the far end. It's a gentler, more accessible alternative to Balbianello - well known locally, but far less of a fixed pilgrimage point than the promontory villa, which usually means a quieter morning.

3.VILLA CARLOTTA, TREMEZZINA

Villa Carlotta's terraced gardens climb the hillside above the lake, giving a different kind of view than a lakeside terrace - layered, framed by the garden itself rather than open water. The villa dates to the late 1600s, but its best-known era came under Gian Battista Sommariva, who added the English-style park and filled it with sculpture, and later Princess Charlotte of Prussia, who gave the estate its name and its rhododendrons and azaleas. It draws its own visitors, but the terraced layout gives more places to find a quiet corner than a single open terrace does.

4.VILLA MONASTERO AND VILLA CIPRESSI, VARENNA

On the eastern shore, Villa Monastero's lakeside promenade and gardens face back across the water toward Bellagio and the western mountains - a genuinely different angle on the lake than most of the western-shore locations get. The villa began as a Cistercian convent founded before 1200. A few minutes' walk along the same promenade, Villa Cipressi's terraced garden - with a history traced back to the 12th century and opened to the public in 1980 - makes a good pairing if you want two settings in one morning. Varenna in general sees fewer proposal requests than the Bellagio–Tremezzina stretch, which is part of its appeal.

5.PARCO CIVICO TERESIO OLIVELLI, TREMEZZO

A public lakeside park, open around the clock, with a straightforward view across the water to the mountains - no ticket, no opening hours to plan around, just whichever early morning or quiet weekday works for you. The grounds appear on land records as early as 1723 and were once part of a private villa estate; the municipality of Tremezzo has owned the park since 1979, and an old stone staircase still leads down into the lake at the water's edge. Not every proposal needs a named villa behind it; sometimes the best answer to "somewhere quiet" is simply somewhere without a name attached to it.

6.HOW TO DECIDE
