Lake Como Engagement: From the Proposal to the Film

Most of the couples who come to us are searching for "proposal" content, but once the ring is on, most start searching for something slightly different: what does a Lake Como engagement actually look like once the moment itself is over. This guide is for that second stage - the days around the proposal, not just the minute of it.

1.THE MOMENT ITSELF, AND WHAT COMES RIGHT AFTER

We treat the proposal and the minutes immediately after it as one continuous piece of film, not two separate deliverables. The reaction, the first call to family, the walk back down from the terrace - that's usually the footage couples end up watching back the most, more than the proposal itself. If there's a plan for what happens in the hour after (a dinner, a gathering, a call home), it's worth telling us in advance so we know whether to keep filming.

2.ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS AND FILM, SEPARATE FROM THE PROPOSAL DAY

Some couples want the surprise captured discreetly and nothing more; others want a second, planned session once the engagement is official - proper light, no need to hide, both of you looking at the camera instead of away from it. Both are valid, and they're genuinely different shots: one is documentary, the other is directed. Worth deciding which one (or both) you want before the date, since it changes how we plan the day.

3.WHERE COUPLES USUALLY GO FOR THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION

If a second, planned session is part of the plan, the towns and villages along the lake - Varenna, Bellagio, the Tremezzina waterfront - tend to work better for it than the proposal location itself. Varenna's lakefront promenade pairs particularly well with a walk up toward Villa Cipressi's gardens, and Bellagio's cobbled lanes give a different, more intimate texture than an open terrace. Quieter streets, arcaded lakefronts, and boat access all give more to work with than a single terrace can.

4.GETTING TO AND AROUND THE LAKE

Most couples fly into Milan Malpensa, and there's no single direct train to Como - the fastest route is the Malpensa Express to Milano Cadorna, then a regional train on to Como San Giovanni, which sits a short walk from the lakefront. Once you're on the lake itself, the shoreline road is narrow and can be slow between the villages in high season, so ferries and private boat transfers are often the more reliable way to move between towns for a multi-stop engagement trip.

5.TIMING AROUND THE SEASON

Como's proposal season runs roughly early April to late October, and within that window, timing matters more than most couples expect. Early morning light is calmer and softer, and the villages haven't filled up yet; the hour before sunset brings the warm glow most people picture when they imagine Como. Midday in peak summer (June through August) is worth avoiding if you can - the heat and the crowds both peak at the same time, and neither does the footage any favors.

6.WHAT TENDS TO FOLLOW AN ENGAGEMENT ON THE LAKE

For a fair number of couples, the engagement is also a preview visit - they come back later for the wedding itself. If Lake Como is where you got engaged, it's worth at least considering as a wedding location too; the two tend to make a good pair narratively, and returning to film a wedding where the proposal happened is something we've done more than once.

7.THE RING AND THE PRACTICAL SIDE

We're not jewelers and won't pretend otherwise, but one practical note that comes up often: if a ring is being brought into Italy, it's worth having the receipt or valuation on hand for travel, and keeping it somewhere other than the main luggage on the day itself.
