Almost every proposal we film is meant to be a surprise, and almost every couple worries about the same thing at the planning stage: how do you get someone to a specific place, at a specific time, with a film crew nearby, without giving anything away. It's a real logistical question, so here's how we usually help answer it.

1.THE COVER STORY

The simplest cover stories tend to work best - a golden-hour photo, a recommendation from the hotel, a walk before dinner, a "quick photo for social media." The more elaborate the story, the more there is to accidentally contradict later in the day. We're happy to hear the story you're planning and flag anything that might not hold up once you're actually there.

2.THE SIGNAL, AND HOW TO STAND

We usually agree on a simple cue in advance - a phrase like "let's get a reference shot here" is enough to tell us the moment is close without meaning anything to anyone else listening. From there, standing in profile or at a slight angle to where we're positioned, rather than directly facing each other, tends to give us both of your faces naturally instead of one back and one front.

3.TIMING AROUND US, NOT AROUND THE CROWD

We ask for a rough window rather than an exact minute, because surprises rarely land on schedule - trains run late, someone wants one more coffee. We'd rather build in slack and wait for you than have you rush the moment to hit a time we gave you. On our side, we're typically in position 30-45 minutes before that window opens, dressed casually so we blend into the background rather than standing out as "a film crew."

One practical thing worth building into that slack: the lakeside road that circles Como (the SS340 Regina) is narrow and single-lane in stretches, and it backs up in high season, especially around Bellagio and the Tremezzina villages in the middle of the day. If your cover story depends on a driver or a taxi arriving on time, give it more buffer than you would at home - a boat transfer is often more predictable than a car when the road traffic is heavy.

4.HOW WE STAY OUT OF SIGHT

We're never introduced as "the film crew," and we don't set up near the two of you - we're already in position before you arrive, using the location's own layout (a treeline, a lower terrace, a bend in a path) to stay out of her sightline entirely. If she asks who we are, "just someone filming the view" has held up every time.

5.IF SOMEONE ELSE IS IN ON IT

Family flying in, a hotel concierge holding a room key, a friend keeping her occupied for twenty minutes, a boat captain briefed on where to hold position - these all raise the stakes on secrecy, but they also raise the stakes on getting the timing right. The more people involved, the earlier we like to be looped in, so everyone's working from the same plan.

6.THE RING

A small, practical detail that trips people up more than expected: keep the ring somewhere secure and easy to reach in the moment - an inside jacket pocket works better than a bulky box in a bag, which has a way of becoming impossible to find at exactly the wrong second.

7.IF SOMETHING CHANGES LAST MINUTE

Weather, a closed path, a delayed train - something not going to plan is common enough that we always have a backup position or a shifted window ready. Tell us as soon as anything changes and we'll adjust; the goal is never to force the original plan through at the cost of the moment.
