Villa Pessina Proposal Guide

Planning a proposal at Villa Pessina in Tremezzo? A private 1920s villa on Lake Como, open all year: the best spots, booking, getting there, sunset timing and how we film it.

Villa Pessina is a private 1920s villa in Tremezzo, on the western shore of Lake Como, with a castle-like tower, an Italian garden and rooms that still have their original wood, damask and painted ceilings. Unlike the famous gardens on a ticket, it is booked by one couple at a time, so nobody else walks into the frame. The film at the top of this page is a proposal we filmed here in May 2026, followed by portraits in the gardens and the rooms inside.

Thinking of proposing here? Check your date with us before you book the villa: the shorter slots open close to the day, and we plan the spot and timing together.

1.WHY THIS VILLA WORKS FOR A PROPOSAL

The villa sits on the slope above the lake road, across from the water rather than on it. There is no private shoreline, but from the garden, the balconies and the terraces the view opens straight over the central lake to Bellagio and the mountains. For a proposal, the real advantage is privacy: the house, the interiors and the garden are yours for the time you book, and the villa staff help on the day.

It also gives a film more than one look without moving anywhere. A proposal in the garden can be followed by portraits on the grand staircase, in the blue room or the golden room, and a few minutes with the vintage convertible on the lawn. Only a few venues on the lake allow a car on site, and here one is included in the rental.

2.THE SPOTS WE USE

  • The garden: the lawn in front of the villa, with palms, cypresses and the lake beyond. The widest view and the easiest place to keep the camera out of sight.
  • The ground-floor balcony: an arched balcony with a balustrade framing the lake. The villa calls it a favourite spot for proposals.
  • The upper terrace: a large terrace with sweeping views over the water, good for the last light of the day.
  • The tower: the panoramic tower that gives the villa its silhouette. It is used for private dinners for two.
  • The rooms: the wooden dining room, the staircase hall, the blue room on the ground floor with a lake view, and the golden room upstairs. They make a dry backup and a very different set of portraits.

3.PLANNING THE SURPRISE

A private villa makes a surprise easier than a public garden: nobody else is around, and the staff know a proposal is coming. A few things are worth settling before the day.

  • How long to book: setup counts as part of the rental time. One hour is enough for the question alone. If flowers go up before you arrive and you want portraits afterwards, book two.
  • The cover story: the villa regularly hosts photo shoots, so an evening couple's shoot at a historic villa is an easy one to believe. A dinner booking nearby works too.
  • Decorations: the villa works with florists, musicians and other vendors who know the house, and they can set up before you arrive. Cold fountains are allowed, and coloured smoke during the day. Fireworks are not.
  • House rules: real candles only outside, music outdoors until 23:00, food only where the staff set it out, and no smoking indoors. Anything like a fog machine or moving furniture is agreed in advance.
  • Arriving: come by car to the public parking next door or on foot from the Tremezzo pier. We are already in position and out of sight.

A sample evening in June, with sunset around 21:15:

  • 19:15 - the rental starts. The florist sets up in the garden and we take our positions.
  • 20:00 - you arrive with your cover story.
  • 20:15 to 20:30 - the proposal on the balcony or in the garden, while the light is still warm.
  • 20:30 to 21:15 - portraits in the rooms, with the car on the lawn and on the terrace as the sun goes down.

If family or friends are waiting to celebrate after the yes, the garden can take a small party, and the villa can arrange the extras through its vendors. For a group of 10 or more it asks for a toilet attendant. More on keeping it a secret: How to Plan a Surprise Proposal on Lake Como.

4.BOOKING THE VILLA

Villa Pessina is not a public site with tickets. It is a private house rented by the hour for proposals, elopements and shoots, and it opens all year. You book it directly with the villa, and the rental includes exclusive use of the house and garden, a room to get ready or change, the vintage car and permission for professional photography and filming.

The shortest slots are only confirmed close to the date: a one-hour booking about 30 days ahead, two or three hours from about 90 days ahead. The villa asks for a deposit to hold the date, and the rental is paid separately from our film. Current prices and terms are in the guide we send couples once they get in touch.

5.GETTING THERE

  • Address: Via Statale 3947, Tremezzo, on the main lake road.
  • By ferry: the Tremezzo stop is 3 minutes away by car or about 15 minutes on foot. Lenno is 5 minutes by car.
  • By car: two cars can park inside the property. Public parking right next to the villa, a minute on foot, is the better choice, and the villa asks for it when there is drone filming.
  • With a boat: if the plan includes time on the water, you can leave your things at the villa during the rental and come back to it. The piers are close enough to do both in one afternoon.

6.THE BEST TIME OF DAY

Because the villa is private, the time is yours to choose. That matters at sunset: the ticketed gardens close by early evening, while here the rental can run into the evening. The villa faces east across the lake, so the low sun lights the water and the far shore in the last hour before sunset, and the tower is lit after dark.

In midsummer the sun goes down after 21:00. For a golden-hour proposal plan to be in place about an hour before, and leave time for portraits while the light lasts. Sunrise and sunset times by month are in our guide to where and when to propose on Lake Como.

7.HOW WE FILM IT

We film proposals documentary style: we stay out of sight, nothing is staged, and the real moment is what ends up in the film. At Villa Pessina we usually agree on the spot in the garden or on the balcony in advance, arrive before you and set up where the house and the planting hide us. The villa allows drone filming, and we still check the Italian drone rules (ENAC and D-Flight) for the day.

Proposal films start from €1,000, with a €500 deposit (€1,000 for photos and a film) to secure the date. Travel around Lake Como is included and the film is delivered within about two weeks. Photography can be added with our own photographer.

8.RAIN, WINTER AND AFTER THE YES

  • Rain: the rooms inside are a real backup, not a corridor to wait in. The same proposal works on the ground floor with the lake in the window.
  • Winter: most villa gardens on the lake close from about November to March. Villa Pessina opens all year by booking, so it is one of the few villa settings for a winter proposal.
  • After the yes: the villa can arrange a dinner for two in the tower, on the terrace or in the blue room through its own vendors. There is no overnight stay, so book your hotel nearby in Tremezzo or Cadenabbia.

Questions couples ask

Can you propose at Villa Pessina?

Yes. The villa is rented privately by the hour for proposals, so the house and garden are yours for that time, with no other visitors.

Is Villa Pessina open in winter?

Yes, it opens all year by booking, while most villa gardens on Lake Como close from about November to March.

Does Villa Pessina have lake access?

No. It sits across the road from the lake, so there is no private shoreline, but the garden, balconies and terraces all look straight over the water.

Can we propose at sunset at Villa Pessina?

Yes. Unlike the ticketed gardens, the rental can run into the evening, so a golden-hour proposal in the garden or on the terrace is possible.

Can we decorate Villa Pessina for the proposal?

Yes, through the villa's own vendors, who can set up flowers, a musician or cold fountains before you arrive. Candles are allowed outside only, and fireworks are not permitted.

Can family join us after the proposal?

Yes. The garden can host a small celebration after the yes. Tell the villa in advance, because groups of 10 or more need a toilet attendant.

How far ahead should we book?

For May to September, get in touch with us a few months ahead. Short villa slots are confirmed only about 30 to 90 days before the date, so hold your date with us first and book the villa as soon as your slot opens.
